Using Video JS Macro to display video files that are not in .mp4 format

Confluence will only create auto preview for videos that are in .mp4 with h.264 video codec format. For the other video format, It won't generate a video player to play. 

For the convenience of others on viewing your video without downloading it, please use the following Macro "Video JS".

This video player is the "Video JS" Macro.

Convert to .MP4 with H.264 video codec

Nowadays, video use many different video codec to do video compression. A video with certain video codec could not be displayed on modern web browser.

A common example is the HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) or H.265 video codec, which is the default video format used by iPhone.

To make sure your video can be view on Confluence page without the needs of downloading it, please check your video format carefully using the following steps: 

How to check video codec information

  1. Go to https://mediaarea.net/MediaInfoOnline
  2. Choose your video by clicking on "Choose File"
  3. All of the Media Info will be displayed on the page, please check the format and video codec

    As you can see, the following media info show that the video is in .mp4 format but with HEVC video codec. so Video JS could not display the video.


  4. If you uploaded your video on Confluence page, and it could not play using Video JS Macro, please convert your video into .mp4 with h.264 video codec. 
    You can convert the video online, or using standalone software. Here's are some of the recommend tools you can use:

    Step 1:
     Open the file conversion interface. From VLC’s “Media” menu, select the “Convert/Save…” option.

    Step 2: Add an H.264 video file for conversion. With the “File” tab selected, click on the “Add…” button, import the source video file, and then hit the “Convert/Save” button.

    Step 3: Adjust the necessary output options and convert. Select an MP4 preset from the “Profile” section, hit the “Browse” button to configure where to save the output MP4 file (ensure to have .mp4 as the file extension), and finally hit the “Start” button.

    Step 1: Select → MP4



    Step 2: Click "Output Setting"



    Step 3: On the Video Encode row, select AVC(H264)


    Step 4: Click "OK" to confirm setting


    Step 5: After adding your files, click "OK" to confirm


    Step 6: Click "Start" to start the conversion on all your added videos


    Step 7: When the conversion is completed, click on the explorer icon to access your video in folder 


    Step 8: This is the converted video, please upload this video to Confluence instead
