Virtual student computer Centre (vSCC) is a service provided by PolyU to students to remotely access software at the student Centre. Follow the video instruction of your respective systems at [the bottom of the page] to complete the first-time setup the vSCC service on your computer.

    • https://vdesk.polyu.edu.hk/access works on IE, Edge, Firefox, Chrome (Safari, Opera not tested , Needs NetID Login)
    • Warning, only files and folders inside P Drive will be persistant after ITS shuts down server cluster for maintanance, or after the virtual environment is shutdown by yourself [howto]
    • How do I copy files from/to vDesk
      • If you are using RDP (Remote desktop Protocol) Applications, clipboard between host and guest (CTRL/CMD+C, CTRL/CMD+V) works
    • How do I change the remote resolutions
      • It seems that "physical resolutions" are locked
      • However you can enable stretch resizing by
        • Quitting full screen mode by clicking: 
        • Select smart resizing by clicking the top left icon of the window's title bar
        • IC's lab vDesk locks you at Resolution of 1280x1024, it's terrible for CAD software but you will have to work with it
    • Can I operate vDesk in Browser
      • No, it only gives you the setup files for using with the RDP Application
    • Can I install software on the Virtual Environment
      • No. admin right is not opened, however somehow you can open regedit
      • Nowever, if you find the portable version https://portableapps.com/apps , the application will be able to run as long as it doesn't need administrator previlage
    • Why I'm getting Windows Server 2012 R2 from Windows 8.1
      • It's setup this way by ITS, but they should be compatible as they both use Kernel version : 6.3 9600
    • How can I remove the Remote Feed (Windows only)
      • Click on this icon:
      • Open RemoteApp and Desktop Connections
         
      • Click "Remove"
      • If there's error, Please refer to : [here] and [here], but most likely you are stuck with them, don't worry they are not that big
    • How do I Gracefully shutdown the system when there's no power off option
      • Why do this:
        • Sometimes you might have broken something in the virtual environment, shutting down and reconnecting is equivalent to a fresh start
          • It works on "vDesk - Win10" and "vDesk-IC-Lab"
        • But make sure copy all your work into P Drive before you do this
      • Mostly, crossing out of the vDesk will do the job (which keep the vDesk running on the cloud)
      • How ever if you really want to shutdown
        • Open command prompt by typing "cmd" after clicking start menu
        • Type : " shutdown -s -t 0 " and enter then system will disconnect after shutdown
